Building a brand new 15 story building off the side of an existing 19 story high rise comes with challenges in many facets of the project. When speaking specifically to Stephen Wright, Project Manager for Pye-Barker Advanced Engineered Systems in Florida, coordinating the Fire Alarm and Life Safety system upgrade and installation on such a project came with its own level of challenges.
From design through installation, testing and the eventual acceptance of the integrated life safety systems within the Drury Plaza Hotel in Orlando, coordination was the key focus of all involved in this project.
Seeking coordination and installation efficiencies on this project, Stephen and his team worked with Space Age Electronics to provide solutions for the Smoke Control and Firefighters Service Access Elevator Lobby Temperature Sensing Systems on this project.
Tackling Smoke Control on a project of this level meant looking outside the typically provided Firefighters Smoke Control Station located in the fire command room and considering what can be done for project coordination efficiencies within the field at the Smoke Control System’s many dedicated fans and dampers through utilizing prefabricated control solutions.
“Prefab helped with coordination for the electrical contractor’s installation amongst other items. For us there was less involvement, less time on our end labor wise to set up relays and control modules at each fan or damper location.” mentions Stephen Wright when asked about the efficiencies of prefabricated solutions. The time saved from using prefabricated fan and damper control enclosures meant more time spent on other areas of the project coordinating and working with their EC partners, the AHJs, Hotel Management and other trades involved in the integration of the systems.
The testing process was made much easier when using the Smoke Control Panel and FSAE temperature status panel within the fire command room as well, “We had two towers to test throughout the process. Any work we did on the existing tower would result in having to fully test the new tower. Having the panels Space Age made installed in the fire command room throughout this process meant the AHJ was able to watch the status lights proofing the functions taking place in the field, when you say what’s about to happen, and it shows up instantly right In front of you, it makes the process go much easier.”
When focusing solely on one large project for several months to several years, utilizing time saving solutions to help the coordination and create efficiencies make sense for all trades and stakeholders involved.
