Evolving Standards and Advanced Solutions

The technology a systems integrator chooses for achieving critical life safety functions in buildings is one facet of what sets them apart from the competition. For JM Electronic Engineering the brands they represent are about quality and with that create consistency for their customers. Combining the technology with in-house design, installation, commissioning, and annual service capabilities strategically rounds out the full package offering a company like JMEE has been founded on for over 70 years.

When in the market for a new Emergency Two-Way Communication solution to meet the evolving codes and standards around Areas of Refuge and Rescue Assistance, Chase Labenski, General Manager of JMEE highlights an equal importance to partnership and to quality of solution when choosing Space Age Electronics’, Shield30 Emergency Two-way System. “The products that we use are built well, and we appreciate the relationship that we have with Space Age to be able to have so many different parts that we use on the daily”

Traditionally systems used in similar applications have been a form of phone system providing a level of communication back and forth within a building when someone is in need of assistance, or basic off-site capabilities. As building codes and life safety standards have evolved over time it’s required these systems to evolve as well, performing more like a life safety system to meet the changing definitions of space and use within a building for emergency situations.

Shield is designed and functions with these requirements in mind by providing more information to the responder and allowing for interactive off-site communications to central monitoring stations when a building doesn’t have a constantly attended location for the Emergency Two-way Systems to call in to. “The systems we used before were very basic, when you hit a button at an emergency call station it’s going to dial out and it’s just going to play a message, with Shield you get two-way communication which was a big thing for us, if no one is at the constantly manned location you have someone off site who can talk to you and let you know that help is coming.”

Performing not only to the international codes and standards that now require these systems, Shield is also a purposefully designed solution to meet applications from small single level buildings through mid-rise to high-rise structures. “..with Shield the versatility of being able to cover 30 stories of a building, we could do it as small as a single level application or go to a high rise application and be able to cover all of them.”

When considering a solution to standardize on for these types of Emergency Communications, there are a lot of factors to consider however Space Age makes it easy with Shield being designed and built around the defining criteria and achieving new testing standards such as UL2525 to ensure piece of mind to integrators, building owners and potential users of these systems alike.
